The Institute for Economic and Social Research (LPEM), Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia researched film piracy in 2017. Research was conducted in Jakarta, Medan, Bogor, and Deli Serdang on 800 respondents aged 15 years and over 35 years.

They are actually able to pay for legal products, but they see that the environment is used to consuming illegal content. The internet makes it easier for them to access pirated results, ”said LPEM UI researcher Chaikal Nuryakin (Kompas, 5/5/2018).

Based on research in the four cities, the total losses of producers could reach IDR 1.495 trillion per year. Meanwhile, the national loss is estimated to reach IDR 5 trillion.

Film industry activists work together to collect websites that broadcast pirated films. The list of illegal sites is then submitted to the Ministry of Communication and Information. The site is subsequently blocked.
